Cambodia's limestone caves, often overlooked, are a treasure trove of biodiversity, with species that are completely new to science. Among these discoveries is a spectacularly blue species of venomous pit viper, currently in the Trimeresurus genus, whose vivid turquoise coloring is an adaptation to its moss-covered limestone environment. The expedition also identified several notable gecko species, including the Kamping Poi bent-toed gecko, the Battambang leaf-toed gecko, the Hemiphyllodactylus khpoh, and the Shiva tokay gecko. Some of the most incredible finds were also the smallest, with two new micro-snail species and brightly colored millipedes. These limestone hills, separated by wide stretches of farmland, function as isolated evolutionary systems, producing site-endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. The local community played a crucial role in the research project, sharing their deep knowledge of the land and guiding researchers to hidden cave systems. However, these fragile ecosystems are under threat from limestone quarrying, habitat disruption, and poachers. Conservationists warn that we are in a race against time, as many of these hills could vanish before scientists even have a chance to document the life hidden inside them. Protecting these 'island laboratories' is a complex challenge that requires balancing economic development with environmental preservation. The study highlights the need for immediate action to understand and protect these unique species, as we are only beginning to understand what lies within Cambodia's limestone caves.
